Winnie Mandela’s football team is not exactly a football team. Not really. And our performance is not about football, nor about Winnie Mandela. At its center is a story about one woman, trying to survive oppressive mechanisms of power.
And yet, images of strength, masculinity, and the unambiguous nature of victory that arise from football games seep into the story, and so, the World Cup matches, taking place around us, also invade the performance, playing within it at times, in a live broadcast.
“You sit in a room and all the walls grow taller / the colors grow more intense / a blue handkerchief turns into the depth of a well.” (From the poem “You Surely Remember” by Dahlia Ravikovitch). Following Ravikovitch’s poetics, our work creates a fluid theatrical space in which times, places, and objects are in play – constructed and dismantled, returning and insisting on their presence, and again, dissolving.
Mythic forces meet the everyday in another of Ravikovitch’s stories that seeps into the performance – ‘Where Did Judge Yehuda Hai Poraz Disappear To?’ (from the collection She Came and Went) – an apocalyptic vision of a woman who “neither forgot nor forgave.”
